‘Canton Canton’:¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ The Natural Evolution of A Locality
Firstly, the ‘Canton’ of ‘Canton Canton’ is unique amongst all conceptions that we have ever encountered by such name. According to the observation mode of “figure/ground relationship”, ‘Canton’ in the administrative and geographical sense merely constitutes the ground while its significance lies in the ‘figure’ resulted from the evolution of Guangdong.
‘Canton Canton’ is a kind of taxonomy stemmed from Jean-Henri Fabre’s findings about the symmetry of characteristics in various species. It can be compared to using the same mirror that once lit up the entomology and shedding the reflected light of taxonomy in the field of sociology, so as to reveal the natural evolution of this specific locality. We therefore have invited more than a dozen artists, who themselves can be regarded as the very ‘species’ evolving from this locality and each has his/her own unique perspective, to present ‘samples’ and ‘specimen’ of social phenomena based on their observations.
Thus, within the framework of ‘Canton Canton’, we have liberated the Natural Evolution of Guangdong from the specimen box of the Museum of Natural History as well as the statement of official ‘white paper’. The exhibition can be compared to a provisional outlet where a full range of Guangdong phenomena and species are displayed and sold on shelves. Furthermore, abstaining from the traditional narration method of annals of local history, it can no longer be classified as either public sentiments or food.
Finally, this touring exhibition will open up its classified shelves at each venue, one by one. Now comes the show ……

What is “Cantonism”
Natural History and Local Cultural Classification

Feng Yuan

No matter if Canton is a place for the birth of “Isms” or not (it might be in certain period in the past), at least in terms of certain “common sense”, we have to probe the relationship between Canton and the “Isms” on the popular discourse. Under present popular discourse, Canton is not only far away from “Isms”; but also opposite to all kinds of “Isms”.
Therefore, the emergence of Cantonism is a kind of opposition to those former definitions- which are completely imposed by geographic politic existing in China, even though some tiny differences can be found in those various definitions. The diversity and complexity in local culture of Canton which is able to adjust and adopt the advantage of other cultures have been inhibited, even eradicated to some extent, by the overwhelming power of official discourse which originated from Northern China.
For this reason, those Cantonists who proposed the Cantonism would redefine the inner spiritual core of the word “Canton”. In the local scale, Cantonists are able to find the same story in local culture: those local Canton cultures basing on the local recognition have been divided and transformed by other powerful forces. Recollecting the past history, Cantonists would figure out the trinity of Canton, Macau and Hong Hong once existed, and the contemporary and future situation in Pearl River Delta region after the transformation by world cold war and modern reforms in China. Under the shock of political cold war with “Colors” and the decoloring economic exchanges, the Cantonism has been dismembered and isolated. In most of the time, people are inclined to forget about the common culture community among Canton, Macao and Hong Kong. Even though, in present, those local cultures have not been eradicated completely, it would be very hard to discuss the initial content of Canton culture in the past context.
Consequently, “Cantonists” would leave the inquiry of etymology of Cantonism behind, and pay more attention to the various social ecologies which follow the evolutionary patterns of natural environments. Cantonists classify Canton in the discourse space and phenomenon of Canton in social space- those attempts share some critical properties with building up natural history with taxology. So we can define Cantonists as those art activists who lived or live in Canton who attempt to research and classify those past or present Canton phenomena. Maybe some of those activists were not born in Canton, but their finds and proposed solutions would show special characteristics which exclusively belong to Canton. In microscopic, those finds and solutions can be regarded as the cultural history of Canton; in macroscopic, those finds and solutions are fragments of “Cantonism”, indicating suppressions and transformations it has experienced. In terms of discourse, “Cantonism” is not a declaration, but an action refusing to be assimilated; only in terms of action, the Cantonism would be effective, which is the momentum for us to curate this exhibition.
“Cantonism” is a way for the Cantonists to practice and act, rather than anything else.
